How durable are the finished pieces?Updated 14 days ago
Our clay and varnish are developed to give you a strong, lasting finished piece. With the right care during the making and drying process, your piece can be quite durable. That said, as with any clay piece, we recommend handling it with care rather than putting it to the test!
Here are a few things you can do to get the best result:
1. Score and wet your joins
When attaching two pieces of clay together, scratch the surface of both sides (this is called scoring), dampen the scored area with a little water, then press them together firmly. This helps the clay bond properly at the join.
2. Keep your clay at an even thickness
A piece is only as strong as its thinnest point. Try to keep the thickness of your clay consistent throughout, as thin spots are more likely to crack or break.
3. Dry at room temperature in a well-ventilated area
Avoid drying your piece near a direct heat source. Drying too fast or at high temperatures can cause the clay to crack, and even small cracks will weaken the final piece.
4. Smooth the surface as you go
Using a damp sponge to smooth out any rough patches or imperfections on the surface helps create a harder-wearing finish.
5. Seal your piece with Sculpd varnish
Once your piece is fully dry and painted, apply the acrylic varnish included in your kit. It adds a layer of protection against moisture and contributes a little extra surface hardness to your finished piece.
